Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father had left the family, it was looked after by her mom, grandmother, and godparents. While a small girl, Ford was battling anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted by the word association. Ford was interested in the profession of acting in her teens and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she was a poor fit there. Ford later applied for a place in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Her classmate were Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in 1991, appearing on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Tate also regularly worked as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her set in the year 1996, was soon gaining the attention of her peers.
